Filter by machine tonnageOn demolition and recycling sites the grab sets the pace. A selector grab, also called a sorting grapple, picks up, sorts and moves rubble, scrap, concrete, timber and bulky waste, separating material streams on site instead of at the sorting plant. SAES International is the exclusive distributor for VTN and an official Epiroc dealer, supplying selector grabs for excavators from 0.7 to 100 tonnes.
A standard selector grab is built for sorting, loading and handling: relatively light, with a wide jaw opening for volume. A demolition grab has a heavier frame and thicker jaws, made for pulling structures apart and processing reinforced concrete and scrap. That is why the VTN MD series comes in two versions, Standard and Demolition. On the MD45 for excavators of 2 to 5 tonnes that means 130 kg with a 955 mm jaw opening against 270 kg with a 1,185 mm jaw opening. If you alternate between demolition and recycling, the heavier version pays for itself in service life.
Rotation decides how often the operator has to reposition the excavator. With a rotating boss the grab turns through 360 degrees and the jaws can be set at any angle, which cuts cycle time. If your machine already has a tiltrotator, a second rotation system is redundant: on the Epiroc MG series the rotating boss is removable, saving weight at the head. From the MG 1000 upwards, two hydraulic rotation motors keep the grab from turning away under load when it takes hold of heavy, irregular material.
The VTN MD is designed for high impact loads, few greasing intervals and constant contamination. Synchronised jaw closing keeps both jaws moving evenly, even under an off-centre load, which improves accuracy on irregular rubble and scrap. Wide bearings extend service life, and the hydraulic cylinders brake on the opening stroke so the structure is not shock-loaded. The MD series covers excavators from 2 to 61 tonnes and comes with 360 degree rotation as standard.
The Epiroc MG series covers the widest range, from the MG 100 for mini excavators from 0.7 tonnes up to machines of 100 tonnes. The MG 100 weighs 71 kg with a 600 mm jaw opening and a 310 mm grab width, which suits sorting work and light demolition in confined spaces. An integrated mechanical stop absorbs the end of the closing stroke, keeping peak loads out of the cylinders.
