A hydraulic breaker splits light concrete and takes down heavily reinforced foundations, which makes it standard equipment in demolition, road construction and earthmoving. The breaker runs off the hammer circuit of the excavator and strikes on hydraulic pressure combined with a nitrogen chamber. That combination delivers heavier blows than a purely hydraulic system.

The operating weight of the carrier determines the choice. A breaker that is too light will not produce; one that is too heavy damages the excavator. Beyond weight, hydraulic flow in litres per minute and working pressure in bar are decisive: if the machine falls outside the breaker's range, you will not reach the stated blow rate.

For machines up to 9 tonnes SAES supplies the Epiroc SB range. The Solid Body concept means the breaker is machined from a single block, with no through bolts or side plates. That keeps it slim enough for narrow trenches and interior demolition, and there is less to maintain.
On a mini excavator the setup is more critical than on a large machine. Flow and working pressure must sit within the breaker's range, otherwise the combination underperforms or the machine is overloaded. SAES sets the excavator up to the breaker before it leaves for site.
Typical applications: interior demolition and refurbishment where a large machine cannot reach, trenching and service work in existing surfacing, demolition on limited ground bearing capacity, and underpinning in built-up areas.
In the mid range SAES supplies the Epiroc MB series for demolition and foundation work. This is the class most demolition and earthmoving contractors work in: heavy enough for reinforced concrete and foundations, light enough to run on a standard tracked excavator without modifying the hydraulic system.
For heavy demolition, quarrying and mining SAES supplies the Epiroc HB series. These breakers carry the Intelligent Protection System, which switches automatically between AutoStart and AutoStop and prevents blank firing. Blank firing is the main cause of premature wear to chisel, bush and internal components, and in this machine class that damage adds up quickly.
Epiroc breakers are used on light to heavy concrete structures, asphalt surfacing, rock and reinforced concrete. Three systems make the difference in practice:

Alongside Epiroc, SAES supplies ESTM breakers. This is the choice where price and performance are the deciding factor: proven engineering without the electronic control systems of the Epiroc range, with the same service and the same parts availability from our workshop.
ESTM breakers are available for machines from 1.1 to 120 tonnes and are set up to your machine in the same way as the Epiroc units.
The chisel determines much of what the breaker actually produces. Three types cover almost all work:
SAES supplies chisels for the SB, MB and HB ranges from stock, along with the matching bushes.
Chisel paste and greasing. A hydraulic breaker without lubrication on the chisel shank will wear out the bush within a few working days. Epiroc breakers with ContiLube II grease automatically during operation. Without automatic lubrication, chisel paste is essential. For work in or near surface water and groundwater, SAES supplies the biodegradable grade.
A standard breaker is not built for underwater work. Water enters past the chisel seal and attacks the internal components and the nitrogen chamber. The SAES underwater kit puts the breaker under positive pressure, so air flows out instead of water flowing in.
Applications: demolition of quay and bank structures, work in excavations below the water table, and removal of foundations below water level.
Need a breaker for a single project? SAES hires out demolition equipment from its own fleet, from mini excavator class to heavy breakers. Hiring is also a way to try a class before committing to a purchase.
On projects with tight programmes, such as bridge demolition, we supply stand-by breakers. If the breaker fails on site, work resumes immediately instead of the crew standing idle until a replacement arrives. On a weekend possession, that is the difference between hitting the deadline and missing it.
